I LIKE BOOK

I made these little I LIKE books that came out great!
You can see a sample my son made.
I had my students draw at least four things in their Circle Map.
When I introduced Work on Writing for the Daily 5, I had my
students work on these little books. They had to draw a picture
and do their best "bubble gum" spelling. I went around to help students stretch out words.

 I like Blue Wrecking Ball.
I like playing on the I PAD.
 I like my birthday.
I like candy.

Reading and Writing Workshop

Here are some of the anchor charts my class made to kick off reading and writing workshop.

Three Ways To Read A Book

To kick off 3 Ways to Read a Book, I used the familiar book NO DAVID by David Shannon. I feel like most kindergarteners have heard this book before, so it's familiar and easy to read. I also like to share it while writing time too because this is a story based on real life experience.

Writing Workshop

This is my anchor chart for writing workshop. I did start writing workshop on the first day of school. For me personally, I want to send the message to my students that writing is so important that we need to start it right away.
Of course each day, I am doing a quick mini-lesson that connects to the workshop.

September Lessons

Taking care of our writing tool
Using the date stamp
 Storytelling
Drawing
Using "Bubble Gum" spelling
Each page connects
Where writers get ideas
Rereading your work

I pick one thing to focus on with my students. I circulate the room asking students about their books and helping students add letters/words to their books. If my mini-lesson focused on drawing, I am going to have someone who made a detailed picture share.

Sharing Time

I think this is the BEST book I have read about sharing time at the end of writing workshop. The book is called Don't Forget To Share The Crucial last Step In the Writing Workshop by Leah Mermelstein. I use all of Leah's suggestions for sharing time.

Writing Workshop Board

I have not introduced this board yet to my class, but I plan to in a few weeks. The students will put their name on the spot that they are working on at the start of writing workshop. I will probably use little Post-its

Kindergarten Writing Wall

This is a bulletin board designated to highlight the work we are doing at writing time {I got this idea from Regie Routman}.
Highlighting Books
I bought the picture ledges at IDEA {10 dollars each}

Guiding Questions above the Books

My goal is to have students generate answers
to these questions. We will then create anchor charts.

Word Wall

This is my new word wall.
I plan to put illustrations created by the children under the letter.
I am going to use a large index card.
Next to the word wall I have a little board that has the words we are working on that week.  I call the sight words we are learning  Hearts words this is a phrase used by Nellie Edge. These are the words children need to learn by heart.  I love Nellie Edge!!

Portable Word Wall
I plan to put learned words in the pockets for easy reference. This board can be moved around the room.

Math Routines

Here are some things I have made for some of my math routines. I always seem to be looking for copies each September so I thought I would share them with you. I have blogged before about this amazing math book called Number Sense Routines by Jessica Shumway.  It is LOADED with great ideas and excellent explanation of why we should be doing certain math routines with our kids. I find myself turning to this book all the time.

Keeping Track of the Days in School

(circle the day)

Counting to 100

In the bigger container, students will put a cube in the bucket to represent each day.  Jessica gives great examples of how students count how many. The smaller jar will be used to collect (small rocks) this shows students what 100 looks like.

Number Cards

I saw something similar to these number cards in a Kathy Richardson book. The number cards go to 10. I like the visual of the dots in groups.

Numbers 1-100 for the Hundredth Chart

I could not find missing numbers on the 100th chart and finally decided to make a set for the pocket chart.

How Many Days With Ten Frames

I learned this routine from Mathematics In The City.
I just have the kids stick a circle dot sticker on the ten-frame ( I use the same color dots) once the frame is filled it moves to the tens. My school used to use straws but from our training we learned that Ten Frames are a better visual for kindergarteners and first graders.

Happy Counting!
