Patterns

I have two magnificent math books to share with you!  I LOVE both these books about patterns and the kids LOVE them too. My students couldn't wait to create their own pattern creature. During shared writing time we wrote a bug pattern poem too.

Pattern Jumps On The Number Line
I am teaching a new math program {Think Math} this year and this lesson was challenging for students. The students do AB and ABC jumps on the number line.

Making AB and ABC.
The kids also write numbers on the number line {under the dot}. One of my favorite things about Think Math is that they do lots of lessons with the number line.

Some number patterns we explored
{2,4,6,} {10,20,30} {3,6,8}

Mystery Pattern Riddles

I did some of these mystery riddles with students who have a
strong understanding of patterns. We worked on the AB riddles. Next week I plan to do some ABC riddles. There is a blank template to let your students write riddles too.

Word Work

I have blogged about using this spelling strategy LOOK, SAY, NAME, COVER, WRITE AND CHECK from the book Spelling K-8 Planning and Teaching by Diane Snowball and Faye Bolton.
I recently updated my sheets
To include picture clues for my kindergarten students.
Sight Words in This Download

Look  ~ visual details
Say~ notice parts
Cover~paper over top
Name~ finger under each letter
Write~quickly (think about how the word looks)

I recently came across the book The Next Step in Guided Reading by Jan Richardson. There are so many great things about this book.   It gives explicit information on teaching guided reading and also has tons of suggestions on word study and guided writing. This is a MUST HAVE BOOK!
Jan has an amazing site here CHECK IT OUT
